There are designers with conspicuous style, and those whose work is transparent. If you have a sense of what you like, but need someone to transform your ideas into reality, try Sheryl Fleischer of Square One Design.
Sheryl listens to her clients carefully, interjecting her expertise. “Through the give and take of listening to one another, a vision emerges.” When she gets to the details, such as finishes and tiles, Sheryl will research a myriad of possibilities and select a few to present to the client.
Sheryl’s design philosophy emphasizes the importance of “getting the interior architecture and spatial flow correct first. Furnishings and color are secondary in the design process and should serve to accentuate and enhance the home’s inherent poise and grace.” She believes a successful interior reflects and supports the client’s lifestyle.
Sheryl’s interest in healthy homes has led her to pursue LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, the gold standard of green building. Sheryl also finds creative ways to reuse elements of a home, rather than buying everything new, for example re-caning a wicker chair or reupholstering a sofa.
Once the scope of work is agreed upon and a basic design created, Sheryl presents a detailed budget to the client before commencing work. This eliminates much of the stress and anxiety as the design process progresses. Sheryl takes on small jobs as well as full home remodels.
For Sheryl, design fuses practical concerns with beauty: “When I enhance homes in both an aesthetic and functional way, the people live more joyously and work more productively, whether that be cooking dinner or going to sleep in a room they love.”
Tip: "Good design is not about instant gratification. It is an organic process that builds upon trust and good communication. Honor that process and the importance of the designer-client partnership."
I have had the pleasure of working with Sheryl over the last decade on a multitude of projects, large and small, for our home, as well as the pleasure of watching the work Sheryl has done for friends I have recommended her to who have had the same experience of highly successful long term collaboration. Apart from her impeccable design sense, what I most appreciate about Sheryl is her flexibility, patience and organizational skills. With her broad ranging design experience, Sheryl is able to work in the style that suits her client rather than impose a specific style of her own, to find creative solutions for incorporating the treasured possessions that may initially seem to fit a design plan, to pursue projects and change at the pace that is comfortable for her client, to offer practical advise on what fabrics and finishes will best hold up to the wear and tear of active family life, and to effectively supervise and coordinate complex installation projects. With Sheryl’s help, our house has evolved a layer at a time, like a shell, that is full of memories, comfortable and beautiful, and perfect for our needs.

It was good to have an experienced professional guide us through the design process. She provided both a conventional concept and a more radical change for our kitchen. We ended up going with the more substantial change and are pleased with the results. Sheryl had great availability, reliability and met with us to look over materials.

We would like share with you our story of working with Sheryl "The Design Girl".
We are M S Enterprise, general building construction company in business since 1998.
We met Sheryl on our job in Pacific Palisades.
With many questions and ideas from the owners, Sheryl was able to design the project to not only please the owners, but to make our job of constructing the project a wonderful experience with outstanding results.
We would like to highly recommend Sheryl for your project.
She will make all of your ideas come out exactly as you dreamed it!

Sheryl is a treasure. We had a criminal contractor who ran off with a bunch of money. I got a hold of Sheryl through a friend. She handled everything. She would think of things the architect didn’t think of – like that the linen closet was in the master bedroom and the kids would have to go through the whole house to get towels – or that the heater had been placed in an ugly area. She is very pragmatic, yet so creative! She designed a credenza for us that matches the home and takes in the colors of my mother’s old desk. Anyone who has the honor of working with Sheryl is lucky!

I recently remodeled a bathroom and wanted to use materials, practices and manufacturers that were environmentally friendly. Sheryl was wonderful about steering me toward ideas that were practical and green. She has a tremendous amount of knowledge and resources and if she doesn't know something she knows someone who does. She is also amazingly reasonable, fair, unfailingly polite and cheerful no matter whom she is dealing with--always very professional.

I was really pleased with Sheryl. We had a general architectural layout, but Sheryl did the more practical elements of the kitchen design, designed the bathrooms, redid the master bedroom, and helped us pick out new furniture throughout the house. She also altered the exterior of the house so it would match the interior. Sheryl was excellent with the contractors and available whenever I needed her. I moved in last week and have already recommended her to a friend.

Sheryl finds things the clients want – she doesn’t design for herself. She has a way of taking what a client visualizes for their home and making it a reality. She is also impeccably organized and a very easy person to have around. She knows how to deal with contractors and subs. She respects family heirlooms and incorporates them in a stylish way by reupholstering or refinishing them. She is truly a gifted, artistic designer.

We had the pleasure of employing Sheryl to design two projects for us. First, she found new furniture for our living room/dining area and designed a new stone fireplace. The second project involved refinishing hardwood floors and kitchen cabinets, refurnishing our daughters bedroom, and a bathroom remodel.
Sheryl thoughtfully incorporated our taste and budget, while tactfully encouraging us to broaden our horizons and think about new ideas.
