Contemporary architecture that integrates metal design elements can pose unforeseen problems. A standard welding job will not suffice. Lewis Grace of Apparatis Co. grew up in his family’s custom auto restoration business, and it was there that he developed his expertise in metalwork. This background, coupled with Lewis’ Master’s Degree in architecture from SCIARC, makes Apparatis a natural choice when your project includes artistic metalwork.

By acting as both a design firm and a production shop, Apparatis retains complete control over the quality, engineering, and installation of their work. Lewis explains, “Most designers are not builders. They will make a beautiful drawing of a project on their computer, but leave it up to the builder to camouflage the construction of their pieces – the connections and the welds.“

Personable and intelligent, Lewis has a knack for translating ideas into things. “I think in 3-D, which allows me to quickly pump out a 3-D model for the client. Often the client comes to us with an idea. We need to be certain that the project we hand back to them reflects their concept.”

Apparatis’ architectural details tie together diverse elements within the design of the home. With this goal in mind, the company fabricates what Lewis calls “the diamonds” – light boxes, hand railings, metal panels – in short, the fine points that make a home truly unique.

Lewis seeks to exceed his clients’ expectations in design, production, and quality: “We strive for more than simply fabricating a staircase; we view every project as a work of art.”
Tip: "Before you start a project, take some time to reflect upon your needs and wants. The building process will move more smoothly, resulting in a gratifying project."
Lewis designed, fabricated and installed our entryway, the reception desk, and he did some metal work in our meeting room. I would highly recommend Apparatis. It was a pleasure to deal with a pleasant guy like Lewis. He was on time and on budget. No problems at all. He’s one of those vendors who does design and fabrication himself, rather than sending the job out to a lot of middle people.

I am not a professional designer, but I had ideas for a long metal banister that continued from the stairs into a loft, a pedestal for my dining room table, and legs for a sink. I gave Lewis the concept, and everything turned out beautifully! Personally, Lewis and I got along swell. I will certainly refer him to my friends in need of custom work.

Apparatis fabricated and installed our stainless steel railings and a trellis on our roof deck. They do top quality work that Lewis obviously takes a lot of pride in. Lewis is very conscientious and intelligent and worked closely with our architect. He was on site for the entire installation. His pricing was very fair for the custom work he did. I would absolutely recommend him.

Lewis did some great work in my home – a combination of posts and wires for staircases and raised walkways. I told him what I wanted, and he turned it into something phenomenal. I like that he did all the work because there was only one person responsible for it all. He did a great job in planning, so there were no surprises with the final product or the pricing. Would I use him again? Would I refer him to friends? Absolutely yes on both counts!
