Six Things You Can Do to Make Our City More Livable
  1. Drive Less. Bumper-to-bumper traffic and vehicle-induced air pollution are taking quite a toll on L.A.’s quality of life. Mitigate these effects of car use by taking public transit or carpooling at least once a week.
  2. Use Your Legs. Aside from being great alternatives to driving your car, walking and bicycling are great forms of exercise and allow you to “vote with your feet” for more pedestrian-friendly neighborhood spaces. Walk or cycle to destinations whenever you can.
  3. Support Smart-Growth Development. Smart-growth development allows us to build our neighborhoods to absorb our population growth while enhancing livability. It accomplishes this by building affordable housing and efficient public transportation systems; building new homes, stores, and workplaces near transit; making streets safe for pedestrians and cyclists; investing in older neighborhoods; protecting open space from urban sprawl; and creating urban parks and other public gathering spaces. Supporting smart-growth development will have a positive impact on your quality of life.
  4. Get Involved with Land Use Planning in Your Community. Land use decisions—what we build and where we build it—greatly impacts our quality of life. Attend hearings and volunteer for work groups to let your vision for your community be heard!
  5. Build the Social Life of Your Street. The presence of people brings life to our neighborhoods. Consequently, the livability of our city depends on the presence of people and their interactions. Make an impact on your street by keeping your blinds open or reading a book on your lawn or sidewalk. These “signs of life” will make your street more welcoming, encourage interaction, and slow traffic too!
  6. Support the Creation of Jobs that Pay a Living Wage. Begin to close the gap of extreme wealth and extreme poverty, and improve the quality of life of everyone, by supporting jobs that pay people what it really costs to live in Los Angeles.
